Igorevskaya icon of the Mother of God



Prince Igor Olgovich of Chernigov prayed in front of this icon before his death on September 19, 1147.He fell victim to extensive internecine strife among the Russian princes, who were fighting for appanages and the grand ducal throne. He was first imprisoned by Grand Duke Izyaslav II Mstislavich in the Vydubitsky Monastery of St.Michael near Kiev and then sent in shackles to the Pereyaslavl St.John Monastery. Here he was forced to take the habit with the name of Gavriil. Subsequently, following his transfer to the Kiev St.Theodore Monastery, he was killed by the enraged people of Kiev, who feared that he would become grand duke of Kiev. Feast day: June 5/18.
