Leaping of the Babe

The iconography of this holy image dates back to the days of the Byzantine Empire where it was regarded as an old miracle-working shrine. In Russia, this icon has been known since the 16th century, but in was only in the late 18th century that it became famous. Its appearance took place in the old Ugresha Monastery of St.Nicholas founded by Grand Duke Dimitri Donskoi on the site of appearance of another icon, that of St.Nicholas the Miracle-Worker, in commemoration of the victory in the Battle of Kulikovo. Some sources date the appearance of the Ugresha Icon of the Mother of God "Leaping of the Babe"—a Russian, locally venerated version of the Icon of the Mother of God "Leaping of the Babe"—from 1793 and others, from 1795. No detailed information about miracles wrought by the icon has come down to us. Feast day: November 7/20.
