Icon of the  Mother of God  "Of the Rejoice"

 

The name of this icon comes from the opening words of a hymn dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos, The Virgin Mary is represented here as the Queen of Heaven enjoying btiss in Paradise amid angels glorifying Her- Behind the Mother of God is a light many-dome church, a symbol of the Heavenly Jerusalem, with the blossoming garden of Eden around it. At the foot of the throne on which the Virgin Mary with the Pre-Eternal Infant sits St, John of Damascus is depicted, the famous theologian and the author of the hymn, holding an unfurled scroll with the text of the hymn in his hands.
